Memory Loss or Normal Aging? How to Tell the Difference

What normal aging looks like

Everyone's brain changes with age. Occasionally misplacing your glasses and finding them later, taking a moment longer to recall a name, or walking into a room and briefly forgetting why are all common and usually harmless. The key pattern: you notice the lapse, and it does not interfere with your ability to run your own life.

What deserves a closer look

Different patterns warrant a conversation with a specialist: forgetting names or appointments repeatedly, misplacing items such as keys or wallets more and more often, asking the same questions over and over, finding routine tasks difficult, struggling to find the right word, difficulty writing, trouble learning or remembering new information, difficulty with numbers, or trouble with reasoning and logic.

Often it is a spouse or adult child who notices first, and the person experiencing the changes minimizes them. If your family is telling you something has changed, that alone is a good reason to get checked.

Why finding out early matters

These symptoms can be early signs of Alzheimer's disease or another form of dementia, but they can also come from treatable causes. Either way, you are better off knowing. Today's treatments for Alzheimer's disease work in the early stages, so the window matters, and an evaluation is the only way to know where you stand.

Time is precious. Time is brain. A baseline cognitive evaluation is a simple, unhurried visit, and it is the single best step you can take when memory starts raising questions.
