Leqembi (Lecanemab): What Families Should Know

What Leqembi is

Leqembi (lecanemab) is an FDA-approved therapy for early Alzheimer's disease. It received accelerated approval in January 2023 and full traditional approval in July 2023. It targets the protofibrils that cluster together and form beta-amyloid plaque in the brain, one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease, with the goal of slowing the progression of the disease.

Memory Treatment Centers was among the first medical practices in the United States to infuse Leqembi, and is actively infusing today.

Who may be eligible

Leqembi is for people in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease, including mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer's. Before starting, your care team confirms the presence of amyloid in the brain through testing. It is not for everyone, and eligibility is a medical decision made with your provider after a full evaluation.

How treatment works

Leqembi is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion on a regular schedule at our infusion suite. Your care team monitors you closely throughout treatment, including periodic MRI scans to watch for side effects. Your provider will walk you and your family through the schedule, the monitoring plan, and the risks and benefits before anything begins.

The most important factor is timing: because Leqembi treats early-stage disease, an early diagnosis is what keeps this option open. If you or a loved one are noticing memory changes, schedule an evaluation now rather than waiting.
