What to Expect at a Memory Evaluation

Before your visit

There is nothing to study and no way to fail. A memory evaluation is simply a careful look at how your memory and thinking are working today, so your care team has a baseline and can spot the cause of any changes.

Bring three things: your insurance card, a complete list of your current medications (or the bottles themselves), and, if you can, a family member or friend who knows you well. A loved one often notices changes you cannot see yourself, and a second set of ears helps later when you talk about what the doctor said.

During the evaluation

Your visit starts with a conversation. Your provider will ask about your health history, your medications, and what changes you or your family have noticed. Honest answers matter more than polished ones.

Next comes cognitive testing: structured questions and short exercises that measure memory, attention, language, and problem-solving. Depending on what your provider finds, they may also order lab work or brain imaging to help identify the root cause of any impairment, because not all memory changes are Alzheimer's disease. Some causes are treatable and even reversible.

After the evaluation

Once a diagnosis is reached, your care team builds a treatment plan tailored to you, and explains it in plain language, including what to expect and what happens next. If treatment is appropriate, starting early matters: the sooner memory changes are identified and treated, the better the outcome.

You will leave knowing where you stand, which for most families is a relief after months of wondering.
